How To Be Different, Stand Out From The Rest & Where Did That Pink Hair Come From Anyways

By Sandi Krakowski

I'm fascinated by diamonds… they are a girl's best friend, you know.

The way they reflect off of the light…. how they vary in cut, size and clarity. One thing is for certain, not all diamonds are created alike.

Recently, after 19 years of marriage, my husband upgraded my diamond to something you'll have to come to a live event of ours to see. The cut and clarity are flawless.. and my love for diamonds grew even greater! And it reminded me how not all websites are created equal, being different is important and the key is this:

Be remembered.

Blueprint an image into your customer's minds so they always remember you.

In the days of MBA's and ad agencies, big budgets and how fast can you get on television, it was important to have a brand. Branding…. we heard it all the time. Your brand is you, your brand is everything. People will remember you because of your brand.

When I came online 14 years ago I didn't have a clue what a brand was or wasn't and how it affected what we did. My only goal was to offer the best service possible.. It never dawned on me that not all business owners are concerned about how their clients feel. To me, that was just how I did life.. and how we still do it.

So when someone asked me the other day how I came up with this BRILLIANT brand of mine, my first response took them off guard. "My what?" I asked. "Your brand, you know, the bright smile and pink hair! How could ANYONE ever forget you?" I paused and then nodded, thinking to myself, "Well my focus was never will they ever forget me, it has always been I wanted to be remembered."

But truth be told, the pink hair was never a marketing tactic, even though Dan Kennedy seems to think I need a pink poodle to carry around in my purse. He doesn't know me well enough to know that if I WAS interested in creating a brand, it would be pitbull, not a poodle.

The pink hair was never created as a part of my marketing….. and recently, when I considered whether or not I could change it, many of my customers and friends said they'd love me no matter what but "DON'T get rid of the pink hair!" was the common cry!

It was over a year ago that I was consulting with someone who wanted to write better copy for her website. I had created A Real Change Int'l to teach people what I had been doing all these years.

So we were on YouTube and Google looking for the key players in her niche, which was makeup and skin care. And there it was…. the video that changed it ALL for me! MAC Cosmetics.

"OH MY GOSH… " I let out a gasp… and my client, startled said, "Are you ok?!"  "I'm ok but I have to change my hair!" I replied.

And that my friends is how it all started…

I took massive action and implemented on a whim. I saw a Sr Makeup Artist (who in a search right now I can't even find!) and she had hair exactly like mine…. blonde and brown … with one swoosh of pink. That is how history began!

Funny, because that is how our entire company began…. acting on an idea. Nothing guaranteed, nothing certain, not knowing what would come of it.. but BAM… taking action.

One of the biggest things I wanted to be remembered for is someone who took ACTION and did things that many people said couldn't be done. When it comes to branding, my burning passion was to be remembered as one of the HAPPIEST marketers people had ever met… so happy and so vibrant that they would LOVE to do business with our team! But the pink hair came out of a 'flow' of that desire. Isn't that interesting?

Some of the best brands and ideas will flow out of who you are and what you are all about. It won't come from an MBA or a consulting guide of things that have always worked…. as much as it will POUR out of who you are, if you work on yourself and become true to yourself.

How to be different, stand out from the rest and be where others are not in business?

Be true to you…. live your life fully….. be wide open and do it LOUDLY for all to see.

There are no guarantees, no promises and no assurances of what will come of it. But the last time I checked, one of the most amazing marketers of our time, Lady Gaga, has mastered this process.

You don't have to wear a meat dress, have pink in your hair or do anything wild… but if you be true to who you are, and brand WHO you are…. you'll be remembered. And ironically? It will be the most amazing business you could have ever built. Because there won't be all the games of role playing and trying to be someone you're not.

No one connects and attracts to a company that is just playing a role.

But if you be your BRILLIANT vibrant self…. you'll not only be different and stand out among the crowd? You'll be remembered.

And that… is why the pink hair will stay… and so will the smile. 🙂
