Sandi Krakowski Top Hair Tips

14 TIPS FOR GREAT HAIR!!  (sorry gentlemen, but I get thousands of questions so I'm answering some today)

A lot of women ask me about my hair care, styling and coloring tips. Here are my TOP tips for having beautiful hair that fades very slowly, stays shiny and is healthy even if you're a #diva who colors, curls & chemicals her hair!

#1- Wash your hair no more than 3 times per week. I actually do mine every 3 days. No, it won't get greasy. Actually, washing it daily makes it more greasy because of shampoo & conditioner overload! No dirt or grease in your hair. Even if you think your hair is greasy and oily, try ALL of these tips, including #1 and watch what happens after a month! See tip #9 for style tips for the days you don't shampoo. Also see tip #10 for 'dirty hair days' for fluff, volume and shine!

#2- When getting your hair colored, don't wash for 3 days prior. The extra oil on the hair helps the cuticle to hold color. Oh, and don't over-product it as you wait! If your hair dresser has to fight through your volumizers and dry shampoo and hairspray, you'll end up with breakage. So use ALL of these tips when you're counting down those 3 days.

#3- Don't use keratin excessively! Keratin shampoos and oils and smoothers are great for shiny healthy hair, but an excessive usage of keratin makes your hair break, so be careful!

#4- Biotin supplements make your hair strong. Take some orally everyday.

#5- Don't blow the heck out of your hair! I personally only use a brush and blowdryer fully on my bangs, and the rest I airdry partially, and when I do blow it dry, about 6 months ago I stopped using the big round brush and it stopped breaking and getting so dry. The easier you handle your hair when it dries, the better it will be.

#6- If you use bright colors on your hair or 'unnatural' colors like I did for 5 years with the hot pink, use a non-sudsing shampoo like Chaz Wen on the color that is bright. It will prevent bleeding and fading. I used to wash my bangs with Wen only and pin up, washed the rest with a high quality shampoo and conditioner. I couldn't use Wen all over, it didn't seem to cleanse my hair well.

#7- Don't throw away your great color and hair with a cheap shampoo and conditioner! I buy the 1 Qt bottles at Ulta Stores a few times per year when they have them at 50% off. When they are discounted it's only $15.99 for a QUART! That's cheaper than Walmart Shampoo! A good quality shampoo and conditioner is VERY different than a cheaper product. It prevents breakage, feeds the cuticle, makes it shine, cleanses better and your hair is worth it! If you're coloring your hair, don't waste that expense with cheap products!

#8- Stop overcurling and drying and spraying it! A more natural look is very popular now. Try going 'naturally curly' with a good product like Diva Curl a few times per month or week. Give your hair a retreat. You'll have some great new hair styles! Read up on curly hair online, there's a lot of great info. Diva Curl's book on Amazon is amazing!

#9- Use headbands! Go on Etsy and invest into some great headbands in a variety of styles. Put your hair in a pony, a braid, a bun, a messy bun! Go on Pinterest and get inspired! Add a headband and you won't even know your hair wasn't washed that day! With some great makeup or even a totally natural day you'll look fantastic. Try beanies, hats and even scarves for more options! Also see tip #10 for 'dirty hair days' for fluff, volume and shine!

#10- When you don't wash your hair STOP using the dry shampoos, volumizers, excessive hairsprays, etc. One of the BEST secrets I have found is using a SALT SPRAY hair product. Spritz all over the morning you don't wash your hair and scrunch. A natural curl will come even if your hair is super straight. Let it airdry while you get ready and pick out, fluff up! It's great for your hair and will make it look awesome!

#11- When you use conditioner, don't rinse it all out! You're sending that great product down the drain. Rinse 1,2,3 seconds and squeeze. That's a secret that hair salons use and it's WHY your hair is so shiny and soft after you go to the salon.

#12- Use a great blowdryer! This one tip will change your life and it's why your hair looks so excellent at a salon! If you're not washing as often, or coloring as often, you can now afford a great blowdryer! Look up SOLANO on Amazon for a great choice. It really makes a huge difference!
#13- Use a great curling iron or straightener. This too makes a big difference! My favorite is Hot Tools and I get them for about 40-60% off on Amazon as well!

#14- Last but not least the best hair is a byproduct of a great attitude, a healthy liver and a happy mind. WORK ON YOU more than you do your hair and you'll be amazed at how healthy it gets!
